"about us

cloth fabric: real material for the home

cloth has been making screen printed textiles by hand since 1995. We mainly work with hemp and linen, creating contemporary fabric collections with a strong look and a relaxed natural feel. Our textiles are used for upholstery and soft furnishings in residential and commercial interiors.

cloth is a small independent company with a staff of five. Julie Paterson is the owner and designer, Martine oversees production and Jemima is front of house.

the design process

Julie prototypes and develops all the designs in her beachside workshop in Sydney, beginning the process with drawings and paintings inspired by the local landscape. As a starting point, Julie paints on wood for the design development, some of these paintings are translated into printed prototypes which form the basis for new designs.

The work is produced in short runs by hand in a tin shed in country NSW. This small batch production method is an important part of the distinctive cloth character and allows for a controllable low impact approach to manufacturing and materials.

Felt is such a great material for this type of project, because it does not fray!! That is ultra important when stitching two pieces of material together. Clothing that is embroudered upon is usually a bit stretchy, and since the felt is so friendly to work with, it makes it so much easier when fraying is kept to a minimum.
If you want to try this yourself, I suggest getting a onesie, tshirt, tote bag, or similar item, for your base. Then, go to most craft or fabric shops to find very inexpensive acrylic felt sheets. They are usually around 20 cents each, and there are so many colors!!! If you want to try the wool felt variety, some fabric shops carry it, and it is usually a bit more expensive, and is sold by the yard. The colors are even better for wool felt, and the material is obviously not synthetic :) Use an Elmer's glue stick in clear or purple (it fades away) on the back of your felt pieces to adhere them to the base shirt or item. Just leave the item under a heavy book and in about 5-10 minutes, your item is ready to sew by hand or with the machine! You could also use iron-on/fusible webbing to iron the materials together. Just don't touch teh iron to the felt. Use a piece of cotton as a barrier. Happy crafting

Wow, I am super inspired to make some of these adult sized slippers. You may know that I currently sew mini-sized footies (when I am not studying...). I need to begin making woman sized versions. Many people have asked for them, but since adults have more of a varied size of shoes, they are not as easy as say making booties in sizes 0-6 months, 6-12, and so on.

Talk about incredibly creative! This person or people make up some of the most absolutely wonderful crafting kits anywhere. I really love the colors they combine, and there is really not a lot of overhead cost to making kits like these. Think of how well these would go over at a craft show or for party favors or kids' presents. How fun these people must have with papers, stamps, buttons, and color! I just do not know if color theory like this can be taught :)

School 6th Week Reflections...

So, I made it through week 5 by again looking to the future. I learned last week about how the Post Office and Postal Roads were really the beginning of the telecommunications network. Pretty fascinating. Unfortunately, though, soon stamps raise to 44 cents, and the USPS may not be delivering on Saturdays anymore! I know this will affect us etsy sellers too...who knows what else will change with this flip-floppy economy. I also learned that I probably do not want to be in a managerial position, unless I am called upon to do that type of job. then I will be fully capable! Also, I have a research paper I am writing on Scarface. There was a book written about the way that Scarface (the movie) has influenced Hip hop Culture. Also, there is a documentary that I am going to try to find about the same issues, with interviews from Snoop Dog, Eve, and a few other rappers. I think this topic will be pretty interesting. Oh, too bad, I will have to watch Scarface again :)

School Week 5 Reflections...

So, I am in the 5th week of the semester as an MS Graduate Student. I have less time for making pretty things these days, but I feel that it will really pay off in the long run. I know there are things/projects/jobs that I am involved with, and people I have met, which I would not have even passed by if grad school never would have happened. Grad School is making me a better researcher, and a better writer and communicator.
It is a lot of reading and it may be in an obscure field which I have little interest in, but I am on the downward side of the hill now, so I am looking towards the end...
I am a bit sad that I am watching the world of etsy fly by me and I have no way of participating as much as I want to. But, that is alright. I love my job right now,and that is more than worth it!! I love most everything about it...Especially my nice big window over looking the woods :)

This woman sure has a big heart. I almost had a tear in my eye from reading her story. She and her son adopt Great Danes. All of the profits from her toys go to various rescue sites- I believe mostly for Great Danes, too.
I wanted to share a quote about her story from her website found HERE...
"My name is Michele and I volunteer for Great Dane Rescue. I love Great Danes and grew up with them. My son wanted a dog as soon as he could say the word. Of course we had to get a Dane. I did a google search for "Great Danes" and was shocked to see how many Great Dane Rescue websites were on the search results. I contacted my local rescue and adopted a not so adoptable (Heartworm positive, older Dane) named Daphne! My son and I fell in love with her and my life has revolved around rescue ever since. About 1 year later, we adopted another Great Dane, named Roscoe. You can "meet" Roscoe & Daphne through their photos at the top of the website. I am really impressed with this artist! Her name is Karin Mannerstal, and she is a Swedish graphic designer who does quite a lot of work for IKEA. Her style is very child like, and very cute. This woman really knows what she is doing. As my interest in making/sewing clothing increases, along with my love for designer fabrics, I have lately been noticing kids clothing designers more and more. I wish I had a little model to make clothes for, but I will be mostly be using existing dresses (only dresses at this point), or existing patterns, and altering them slightly and using cooler fabrics. This woman is just amazing! I saw this girls' dress she made, and just fell in love! I don't know how long she has been sewing, but I know if I made myself that dress, you would never see me out of it! Who needs to change out of something that pretty anyway? I notice sort of a trend lately of using many (designer) fabric patterns that seem to contrast quite a bit, but once they are all together, they look stunning. I think this has been they way quilters have done it for a long time. I know clothing takes a lot more time than other items, maybe not quilts...but I am so glad people are putting as much work into these dresses as they are into something like a quilt! This is very fun!

Also, there are alternatives for the expensive rings actually marketed for the Baby Slings: They are quoted from the Elizabeth Lee Designs page.
"What you need are 2" inner circle and are a 1/4" ring welded together. (These metal ones are) made for handling livestock. An average baby colt weighs 600 or so pounds, so this ring will definitely handle the weight of your 10-30 lb baby. They are very very strong and will not break. The nylon rings we carry are designed to hold riggings on sail boats, so they are also very strong. They have a 2" inside diameter, but the core is 3/8" wide so they look a bit bigger than the metal rings."
Sol I will stay on the lookout for these alternatives and may try the hardware store too! The Co-Op would be a fun place to supply Slings to.

My ode to Rik Rak Creations on Etsy! This woman is amazing. I really don't know how she does it, but her style is just amazing. She makes all kinds of items for babies, mamas, house, siy crafts, and probably a whole lot of other stuff. So here are some of the images of her work... Goodbye Two Boutique =(

So, last Friday was the last day for Two Boutique in Carbondale to be in business. Theie store was so rad, but I guess Carbondale just wasn't ready for it. It is unfortunate, because it brought a lot of class to this town. But, I just don't know what it takes here. I would love to have a store of my own, even in that very spot. The size of the store is amazing too. Just perfect for me! I n a post way down at teh bottom of this page, you can see where I posted a ticket rom them where they bought a few of my pouches.

Great Weather Brings A New Opportunity!

So, I had a wonderful and inspiring meeting yesterday eith a lovely woman named Layla. In 2-3 weeks, I will be providing goods for the Co-Op, a community owned grocery store here in Carbondale, IL. They are amazing! They sell mostly organicly grown items, and other healthy goodies. It is a good size too!
So, First, I will be providing them with Zipper Pouches (for toiletries, makeup, organizing small 'roll-arounds' in your purse), and some larger purses- got to got find goodies for that yesterday too. I am also going to try to provide them with Mei Tai Baby Carriers. These seem like things that people who want to do the natural baby carrying will enjoy. Then, in 4-6 weeks, I will give them a slew of baby booties in 5 sizes. I now understand how hard it is to find booties over 18 months. And I definitely make them larger than that!!
I am so excited! I cannot wait to see how they like them.

*Also look for me at the Eastern Illinois University Celebration event April 25-27!!!!
*And Springfest in Makanda, IL the first weekend in May!
*And The Downtown Art & Wine Fest in Carbondale, IL on May 2. Trying to diversify my shows this year =)

I am working on a website that is a database of art fairs and craft friendly events for Southern Illinois, Springfield IL, and also Paducah Kentucky and surrounding areas. I have not yet found a site similar to this or much info on the area's craft events at all, so I went ahead and made one myself!!

I started making hats too! The brims of the bucket hats are reinforced with interfacing- my new friend- and they are lined. All seams are enclosed too!!! I have also kept busy with making lots of other stuff. I have a craft fair coming up on March 9th, Saturday in MARION, IL. Wish me luck!!!

Hiking in Southern Illinois

Today for the day off of school, we got the wonderful idea to go hiking. We went to a place called Little Grand Canyon. There were so many icicles, I loved it!! It is the nicest day, weather wise in a while. It was so incredibly nice to get some fresh air!!

I am entering my last semester as an undergrad. I will soon be graduating with a BFA in Communication Design/Graphic Design, and a minor in Art History. I am pretty happy about all of that. I am hoping that I do well like I did last semester. I made Dean's List, so that is always great.
